Worldwide Space Invaders

Space invader

I’ve seen these space invader mosaics all around Amsterdam, and it surprised me to hear from other people that they’d seen these signs in other countries and other cities too. I’ve wondered about what they were, but never really found out. Until recently.

It came up in a conversation with friends a few days ago, and I learned that those pixely aliens are in fact a form of street art, inspired by the old computer game Space Invaders, and becoming a worldwide urban invasion. Apparently it’s been spreading throughout the world since the 1990s already!

One can only wonder how many people walk by them every day, never noticing them or knowing what they are… I’m really glad I finally found out. I think this sort of stuff is just absolutely cool, and I’ll definitely keep an eye out for them during my next travels.
