Greetings from Guatemala!

I ended up staying in Caye Caulker for a full week. What a great place to chill! Ive done many more dives (including the world famous Blue Hole) and have seen so much underwater plant and animal life that I cant even begin to describe it all.

After five days on the island our four-person travel company split up. Two of them went back to Mexico to catch a flight back home, one went to Guatemala ahead of me, and I simply stayed two more days because I didnt want to leave. From our private little house at The Split, I moved my stuff to Tinas Backpacker Hostel, another cool place to spend a few nights.

Funnily enough on my last night in Caye Caulker I yet again encountered my Dutch friend Ferco, totally coincidentally. It was a happy reunion. We drank a few Belizean beers in the I&I, a wicked bar where all tables and seats are hung from the ceiling (hammocks, swings, you name it). We exchanged our adventures so far and I heard some great stories about his travels through Guatemala.

The next morning I got up very early to catch a boat back to Belize City. (This was in fact this morning by the way.) I bought a bus ticket to Flores, Guatemala, where I am writing this post from right now. The border procedures were a bit of a hassle, but hey I made it. :)

Flores is an island in the middle of a lake (I forgot the name of it), a pleasant little village. Most travelers here only stay to visit Tikal, the most famous and largest Maya site in entire Central America. Ill be doing that trip tomorrow (the bus leaves at 0500 AM, argh) and am very curious to see it. I dont know how long Ill be hanging around here, but I have plenty of time left.

Today I am exactly halfway through my trip, and still have 4 weeks before Im flying back home! In the next 4 weeks Ill be exploring Guatemala, and might even take a detour into Honduras to visit island Utila, for some more diving. I must say I really reacquainted myself with my old passion for diving during this trip…

Even though Ive been in Guatemala for like 6 hours, I quite like it, especially the prices (Belize is the most expensive country in Central America you see). Im travelling alone now, well… alone… In the minivan to Flores I met up with a nice group of people from all over Europe and we are all staying in the same hotel. We just had a great cheap dinner together, and we will all be doing the Tikal trip tomorrow. And I just got an email from the person in our travel company who went to Guatemala before me, who is still in Flores. Ill pay a visit in a few minutes.

All in all, Im doing just fine here. Ill try to post soonish again and put up some more pictures. All the best,

James
