Caye Caulker

It was a long haul from San Cristobal de las Casas to Caye Caulker. The trip took a full day of buses, taxis, walking and a speed boat. But I made it. Belize is quite different than Mexico. It’s way more expensive, the people speak English (with a wicked Jamaican-like accent), and the transportation is more like I imagined it to be in entire Central America (very basic old American school buses, versus the Mexican first-class over-airconditioned tv-installed and reclining seats buses), and the distanced to be travelled in this country are A LOT smaller than in Mexico, a nice change I must say.

Caye Caulker is absolutely wonderful. It’s a tiny island which can be crossed within 10 minutes on foot. There are only little wooden houses, lots of sand and ocean, and a warm breeze that never stops and just seems to embrace you all the time. In the daytime it’s relaxing, swimming, snorkelling or diving, in the night time it’s relaxing, eating, dancing, or drinking. The four of us have rented a nice little wooden house right smack in the middle of the beach, surrounded by palm trees, and we live an easygoing life. No stress whatsoever.

Today I made my first two dives, I have another scheduled two dives for tomorrow. The ocean is amazing! I’d completely forgotten what it was like to be diving, the last time was in Egypt in 2001 after all. I’ve seen some really neat fish, petted a few sharks, and seen loads of coral. The underwater world is wicked.

Right right, gotta go now. I’m on a Caribean island, baby!!
