Central America Trip Planning - Part I

As a fulltime student with a parttime job, I unfortunately don’t have many opportunities to practice my favourite hobby: backpacking. When I do have the chance to hit the road, you can be sure that I’ll use it to the fullest though. Summer holiday is only a few months away, and I’ve begun planning and preparing my next trip. In this travelog I’ll post my plans, preparations and ponderings along the way of realizing my journey.

The very first thing to do - for any trip - is to figure out where you’d like to go. After considering a number of options, including Europe, Russia (the Trans Siberian Express) and Asia, I’ve decided I want to visit Central America. Many travellers have told me their very positive experiences in Mexico, Guatemala and Costa Rica and it really seems like a region filled with wonderful cultures and sights to see. So Central America it will be! I’m already very excited :)

Because summer holiday only lasts two months - oh how I wish it would be longer! - there’s not much time for trailing or fun/slow/different methods of transportation. In other words, I’ll have to fly there. After a little research I found that the easiest and cheapest place to fly into Central America from Europe is Mexico City.

So I surfed to Expedia, a flight booking website which I can recommend, and checked out the airfares for a number of flight dates. The cheapest that came up was flight from United Airlines which can be purchased in advance for a little over 700 Euros. That isn’t cheap I know, but apparently it’s the best out there and in the end it will get me to Central America.

And that’s basically the status of my trip planning up until now. I haven’t bought the ticket yet, and I’ll give it a few more nights of sleep before I take the plunge. I’ll post an update soon.
